Pattern for the Pescovegetarian Beanie

villaeläin presents:
Pescovegetarian Beanie

(more on my flickr)

Yarn: I used Sandnes Alfa (blue), Queensland Uruguay Chunky (light brown) and Sandnes Fritidsgarn (brown) for these, but any bulky weight wool yarn should be fine
Gauge: 13-14 sts = 10 cm or 4 inches on bigger needles, row gauge isn't crucial
Size: to fit an adult with about 55-60 cm or 21,5-23,5 '' head circumference
Needles: 5 mm and 6 mm / US 8 and 10, or any needles that give you the gauge

Note: the beret is knit in the round with a set of 5 dpns or a circular neelde. I found it far easier to follow the stitch pattern when knitting with my dpns, but to each their own. The stitch pattern comes from Lesley Stanfield's book The New Knitting Stitch Library, modified for knitting in the round.
Altering the size or yarn is easy, as you can knit it with any number of stitches that's divisible by 13. I went for 78 sts with Alfa and Uruguay Chunky and 91 with the slightly thinner and more beret-like Fritidsgarn. (By changing the needle sizes and stitch counts you can also affect the shape of this a lot, I got a beret with a bigger number of stitches, and by using smaller needles for ribbing and bigger for the rest.)

Pattern: Using smaller dpns, loosely cast on 78 sts and divide on four needles: 26-13-26-13 sts per needle. 1st rnd: knit chart row 1 and repeat till end of rnd. Repeat 1st rnd 5 times (or till the ribbing is the length you want it).

Switch to bigger needles and start knitting according to the chart, beginning with chart row 1. Continue repeating the chart till the beanie measures around 17 cms / 6,5 '', ending with chart row 4.

In decrease rounds, you decrease the outermost stitches on both sides of every chart repeat, working the stitches in the middle in pattern. In the rows between the dec rows you knit the middle stitches according to the chart as well, but always knit the outermost remaining sts.

1st rnd (dec): *ssk, p1, k2, p1, k1, p1, k2, p1, k2tog*, rep *-*
2nd rnd: *k3, p2, k1, p2, k3*, rep
3rd rnd: *k2, p2, k3, p2, k2*
4th rnd: *k1, p2, k5, p2, k1*
5th rnd (dec): *ssk, k2, p1, k1, p1, k2, k2tog*
6th rnd: *k2, p2, k1, p2, k2*
7th rnd: *k1, p2, k3, p2, k1*
8th rnd (dec): *ssk, k5, k2tog*
9th rnd: *k2, p1, k1, p1, k2*
10th rnd (dec): *ssk, p1, k1, p1, k2tog*
11th rnd: knit
12th rnd: *ssk, k1, k2tog*

Drag yarn through rem 18 sts and pull tight. Damp and block if you desire and weave in ends even if you don't. Report the result here (pretty please? :), and tell me if you spot any unlogical, or worse, things in the pattern.

This is a great pattern; the instructions were clear for me and I didn't run into any problems. I put a photo of my finished hat up on Ravelry (under Phretys). Thanks!

I'm almost done mine, it love this pattern! However, it might be worthwhile to just add what stitches the "x" and blank square mark exactly, just so new knitters don't get confused. Great hat!
